Chapter Fifteen

Back at the library, Wavy led Niall through the alcove with the statue of Hecate and into the entrance hall. As the wall disappeared, she took in the huge space built of pale marble and warm, dark wood.

She read the text engraved into the marble arch. The Von Abendroth Library for the Preservation and Study of Magical History. The words seemed so solid, so real, and yet only available to a segment of the world, but not her. She had removed herself from the world—this secret world too. For the first time, she felt something missing from her life.

Looking at the secret library wing, Wavy wondered what else she’d been missing as a result of her choice to seclude herself. It felt like the world itself had split open before her. Like she’d just landed on an alien planet only to find that it was actually her home. Except now she was alone.

Niall had been surprised that she didn’t know the Von Abendroth name. She was ashamed and embarrassed that she’d never heard it before, though she wouldn’t give Niall the satisfaction of knowing about that.

Entering the hall, she glanced at the portraits of each member of the Von Abendroth family again. She passed the old woman and stopped at Stephan’s portrait. His bow tie was the same icy blue as his eyes. Next was his son, Kasper, with the same sharp nose as his father, but brown eyes. Then Peter. Then. . . Wavy stepped to the fifth portrait and stopped walking.

She stood transfixed. This son must have taken after his mother. With his greased-back blond hair, thick brows, brown eyes. . . his features, weirdly familiar, sent a wave of gooseflesh over Wavy’s body. There could be no mistaking it. She scanned the brass plate for his name.

Niall, having realized Wavy wasn’t with him, stopped walking and came down the hall. He stood next to her, the smallness of his presence a reminder of their reason for being here.

“What’s the holdup?” he asked.

Wavy read the name, willing it to mean something. “Gregor Von Abendroth.”

Niall followed Wavy’s gaze to the man in the portrait. “Yeah, so? Probably a selfish bastard like his old man.”

She pointed to the face with its high cheekbones and cleft chin. He wasn’t terribly handsome, but there was something in his eyes, a softness. “That’s him. That’s the man whose ghost I saw. The one connected to you. It’s Gregor Von Abendroth.”

Niall leaned against the wall as if the wind had been knocked out of him. “But. . . that doesn’t make any sense. It can’t be. Why. . .?”

“Are you all right? You’re shaking.” Wavy grabbed Niall by the arm and guided him into a nearby chair. “What’s going on?”

Niall stared at the wall. “I thought this was about my grandmother. They said that this would clear the family name once and for all. They had the picture of Ethaniel Morrison.”

“There has to be some other explanation.” Wavy looked at Gregor’s face in the portrait.
